Following the footsteps of Australia, the US Bureau of Land Management now wants to drive us wild horses into extinction. When the Wild Horse and Burro Act was passed in 1971, it was said to be enacted to prevent population declines to extinction levels. Back then, the herd size was about 25000 horses. We have about 90000 horses today, yet the BLM intends to cut by two thirds to arrive at "sustainable" levels. So the BLM wants to reduce population to a level so low it was seen as an extinction risk when the 1971 act was passed. Whatever the ulterior motives, these cruel actions against wild horses have to be stopped immediately. The BLM may also consider resorting to actual science instead of politicized junk estimates.

The horrible news keeps coming in. Natural England now intends to reduce livestock in the Dartmoor region by 50-89% to "prevent overgrazing." The legendary Dartmoor ponies, wild horses that have roamed this area since the Bronze Age, have been reclassified as 'livestock' and may end up being mass murdered by an edict from the organization that exists to protect wildlife.

The Dartmoor is a very green and humid region. There are no signs of "overgrazing" by any realistic standards. Everything there looks very much like it looked a century ago. Yet a centralized quasi-governmental organization uses cooked-up pseudo-science to have horses cruelly culled by the hundreds.

There is no reason to reduce livestock in the first place. Nor is there a reason to classify the Dartmoor ponies as livestock. The actually diversify the ecosystem by feeding on different grasses. This entire story is yet another regrettable showcase example of what happens when "expert classes," who have never been to the Dartmoor and many of whom have never seen a horse, rule by edict that the death cult of net zero wokeism shall be adhered to at any cost. We need to decentralize such powers to the most local level possible.

Meanwhile, about nine thousand wild horses have been assassinated at Kosciuszko national park, for the dubious motivation that 'hard-hooved horses trample alpine vegetation.' Fortunately, the park service has announced that this barbaric practice is now over since 'the park is on the mend.' In the entire debate, the government's standpoint seems to be that it is more important for human visitors to have 'pristine alpine vegetation' to look at than to have those natural resources available for their noble, natural occupants. Who are they to decide?

Unfortunately, Australia's shameful mass slaughter of brumbies continues unabated:

Authorities want us to believe that the indiscriminate killing of horses from planes is a "humane" way to "mitigate" the obvious environmental catastrophe of them "trampling fragile alpine vegetation" and "degrading waterholes." Of course, the only "humane" solution then is to shoot the horses.

In reality, the result of the reckless shooting is that gunshot mares are running around wounded, while their foals are starving besides them. Horrific. All the while, we don't get an explanation as to why those foals are not more fragile than the abundant vegetation.

We could opt for proper herd management, so that we wouldn't have to choose between horses or the so-called "fragile" vegetation. But if we really had to choose one over the other, I would know which one to pick! Let's start treating weeds like weeds, and horses like the noble animals they are!

In an absolutely disheartening update to this post, the New South Wales legislature has now removed the Kosciuszko Brumbies' heritage protection, which allows them to be labeled 'feral pests.' By consequence, thousands of horses will be shot from helicopters by barbarians who are just as heartless as the failed politicians who voted for this.

Horses are noble animals. They are never 'feral pests.' However, failed politicians like Dr Joe McGirr, who initiated the bill, are a feral pest and one that needs to be contained with urgency indeed.

Why was this nonsense initiative started in the first place? Oh yes, so the 'pristine alpine grass' doesn't get 'trampled' by horses. Besides the fact that it is almost impossible to see which grasses are trampled in sea of green, the purpose of grass on this planet is to feed horses, not the other way around. Kosciuszko was worthwhile visiting because it hosted the brumbies. Once the killing will be over, there will be no reason to go there, nor will the park have any remaining value or merit protection of any sort. We should immediately start turning the park into a set of strip malls and parking lots.
